Friday Night Tykes Season Review

The Outlaws- It’s been all about their first season in the Snoop League. Snoop Dog the rap star has small leagues in Southern California and Texas. Their league in Chicago went belly up and the league they started in Denver looks to be on life support or finished. In real life there is no real “National Champion” in a league that is in just two states.

Friday Night Tykes Episode 6 Review

For those youth football coaches following the reality television show Friday Night Tykes, this is my take on Episode 6. The goal is to help youth football coaches understand the good and not so good things they see on the show and how they might apply it to their own teams. I was a panelist for the wrap up show

Friday Night Tykes Episode 5 Review

Once again the Predators focus on “being physical” in practice during the week. We see lots of one on one tackling drills from long distance. These aren’t even open field tackling drills where tacklers can learn how to break down, pursue and track, these are mindless hitting drills where the runner has to run straight ahead from 7-10 yards right at the tackler. What a waste of a youth football practice.

Friday Night Tykes Review Youth Football Show Review

As we did in the past two seasons we will review each show in an attempt to help youth football coaches learn what they see on the show makes sense and doesn’t. Before we start let me say from my own experience of shooting the “Worst to First” show last year, NO ONE is perfect. When a camera crew is following you around 24×7 for every practice and every game, your smallest of mistakes are going to come out and may even be amplified. Friday Night Tykes is out to build an audience and what makes the show and is left on the cutting room floor is left to the producers. It is what it is, a one hour episode can’t cover all the good or bad things all of the coaches did that week.

Friday Night Tykes Season Two Episode Eight

This episode featured the Outlaws, their athleticism and their mismanagement. As mentioned in previous posts, they just have too many coaches and they continue to get in each others way. Even in the semi-final game head coach Fred still doesn’t have down who is supposed to be […]

Friday Night Tykes Season Two Episode Seven

The Ducks from Austin, Texas lose their coach for the rest of the season thanks to a post-game fist fight he has with a disgruntled parent in the parking lot. Parents can be crazy and we don’t know what led to the altercation, but my guess is the coach had plenty of ways to avoid the incident. This doesn’t surprise me in the least coming from a coach who greets an assistant coach with the words “how ya doin gangsta?” This guy is a buffoon and some of his kids follow suit, some do trash talk. His over the top bravado and stick it in your face approach to sportsmanship has no place when you are coaching youth football.

Friday Night Tykes Season Two Episode Six

This episode brought an end to the Spartans, Lobos and Broncos seasons. While all three teams ended up with just a handful of wins between them, we see three very different teams. None were coached  very well but both the Broncos and Lobos kept the kids engaged, tough to […]

Friday Night Tykes Season Two Episode Five

The Spartans team is totally disintegrating just like I said it would. That was an easy call and I stuck with it even after they started out at 2-0. This coach would be a good drill instructor, but he’s a terrible youth football coach. His team lost its fifth straight game in blowout fashion. Mr Discipline lost his cool in the blowout and even talked trash to one of the other teams showboating players. After starting with over 30 kids he now has 13-14 kids showing up to practice. He goes on and on about “quitters”, he obsesses over it. Yet his practices prior to game seven still consist of lots of pushups, planks, sit ups and squat thrusts, a TOTAL waste of time.
